Adwords -> Google Ads Migration

On April 27, 2022 Google Adwords will be sunset and the API will stop working. This necessitates a migration of Alli Data Library (Core Data) from Adwords datasource to new Google Ads datasources.

Most of the migration will be done behind the scenes by the Data Engineering and Alli Data team, but some change will inevitably affect other teams and tools that use Alli Data Library (Core Data).

What changes affect my team?

  • Adwords datasources in Alli Data will stop loading data on April 27, 2022. This includes the standard adwords_insights_{reporting_level} datasources that the Data Engineering team manages.

  • Column names and some reporting values will differ between the old Adwords datasources and the new Google Ads datasources.

  • Some column names and some reporting values in Alli Data Library (Core Data) will change. The Data Engineering team will work to minimize these changes.

  • The DE team will not create or manage an equivalent Google Ads datasource for all standard Adwords datasources. For instance, there will not be a googleads_insights_campaign to replace adwords_insights_campaign.

What does my team need to do?

  • Migrate any reporting and alerting that does not use Alli Data Library (Core Data) from Adwords datasources to Google Ads datasources. Google has provided a migration guide for report types.

  • Any reporting that is built on top of Alli Data Library will be migrated automatically. But the team should be aware that some columns will be removed, new columns will be added, some column names will change, and some reporting values will change.

  • Reach out to the Data Engineering team in #alli-data-library with any questions

When will this migration happen for my client?

  • Reporting that does not use Alli Data Library can be migrated to Google Ads datasources now.

  • Reporting that is built on top of Alli Data Library will be migrated on a client-by-client basis. The Data Engineering team will reach out to the client team before beginning. This staggered approach will begin in mid-late March
